The F Word

The other day I overheard Joe tell someone whilst at the Creative Arts Workshop, our other small business in Nyack, that they don’t like to use the F word there. I thought to myself, “uh, no shit, Joe,” but then he explained that he meant the word FAVORITE.

It was a pretty interesting notion to me that maybe that word shouldn’t be used, and since this man studied this stuff, I gave it some thought. I remembered a few instances when it was used recently that drove me crazy, like when people post on social media about what someone’s FAVORITE [insert food item or restaurant here] is, or when someone asks me what my FAVORITE cheese is. The word immediately implies that everything else is less than, and as a person striving to be kind (just like I know you are), I agreed that we shouldn’t really use it.

But, as a man of contradictions, I feel like maybe it could be used for actual very special moments? I tell Michael every night before bed that he is my FAVORITE person - a phrase borrowed from my dear friend Christina. And while I think that’s the nicest thing anyone could say, maybe it’s all too much, and I’m ruining my child with unnecessary pressure.

Oh well, I guess there are other words that start with F I could call him (stop it, I would never)!

xoxo,
Scott
